All about File Sizes - Bytes, Kilobytes etc

Good morning everyone and welcome to this week's Midweek Wednesday IT Blog. Hope your all having any awesome week.

Today I'm going to cover all things Bytes, I will cover what each thing is and how much you can store roughly with each section. What's the best to get for different situations.

All of the above refer to different sizes of files, or there capacity of storage on devices such as Hard Drives, Xbox, PlayStation, Computers, Laptops, MacBook's.

Each section is built up from the other so they increment up in sizes, and each size has a different name given to it.

What exactly are these sizes?

A Bit is the smallest single piece of information, either a 0 or 1. In short they are classed as a Binary digits.

- A Byte is a collection of 8 bits

- A Kilobyte (Kb) is 1024 bytes

- A Megabyte (Mb) is 1024 bytes

- A Gigabyte (Gb) is 1024 megabytes

- A Terabyte (Tb) is 1024 Gigabytes

So when you see the size of a file or the capacity of a storage item you can see just how big the information is.

Emails and What Limit they have:

Generally when transferring items via email it's restricted to 25mb in Gmail or 35mb in outlook.

To be able to see the size of your file you need to find the file you are looking at sending, click on it once, then at the bottom of your window you will see how big the file is. For example the one shown below is highlighted and is 364kb in size.

By knowing this information you'll be able to see if you can send it in an email or whether you need to upload it in something like Google Drive and give that one person access to it.

What is equal to each size?

To give you a better idea on how many things each size is capable of, here are some guidelines for you.

Megabytes: MB

So for 1MB is about 1 minute of audio so for a typical song lasting 4 minutes it will be roughly 4MB in size.

So if you were emailing over audio files to a customer or client the maximum in Gmail you'd be able to send is 25 minutes worth of audio,

In outlook you can send up to 35 minutes of audio roughly.

Gigabytes: GB

For 1gb of storage you can roughly save 230 songs, which is roughly 16 hours of music or 20 albums.

An average 2 hour movie is about 1.5GB so you wouldn't be able to save a whole movie into 1GB of storage.

Due to size this wouldn't be able to be sent in email to anyone without uploading it somewhere externally, YouTube and have it private or upload it to Google Drive.

Terabyte: TB

For 1TB worth of storage you can roughly save:

- 250,000 photos taken with a 12MP Camera

- 250 films or 500 hours of HD Video footage

- 6.5 million document pages, so word documents, PDF's, Presentations etc.

For a size comparison is about the same a 1,300 physical filing cabinets put into one safe place.

For this amount of storage it wouldn't be something you'd look at sending anyone anyway so this part become void in this scenario.

What Size do you need for external Hard Drives?

Depending on what you are looking at storing will depend what size you need if you saving different albums for example I would get a 1GB or 500MB disk drive (USB flash drive) to store each album on separately.

If you're looking at a full back up drive I'd go straight for a 1TB so you know you are covered for a long time.

If your gaming and need extra space on your console. I'd look at a 1 or 2TB Gaming Hard Drive. Please note they have to be compatible with the console your using and it has to be made for gaming or your console will not read them.

To Finalise:

All that bit, byte, Kilobyte, Megabyte, Gigabyte and Terabyte mean are a form of storage space, each file, image or audio and video item you create has its own size and it will be in one the ranges mentioned throughout this blog.
