Viruses and How To Protect Yourself!

Good morning everyone and Welcome to this weeks Midweek Wednesday IT Blog. Hope your all having an amazing week.

This week I'm going to talk about all things Virus and Anti virus software related.

What is a Virus?

The simple way of putting what is a Virus is it's a piece of code that is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data.

Some more severe Viruses can also go through your contact lists and email and transmit itself to your contact list without you even knowing it's doing it.

Viruses can be hidden in downloads from things such as movies, applications or even programs sometimes. So always be aware of what and where your downloading your information from. They can also be contained within an email as an attachment apparently sent from a contact of yours, So if your not expecting an email I would be cautious when opening attachments.

What can I do to protect myself?

The easy answer to this is to install some software to help keep your computer keep running at a top rate.

The first thing you want to look at is a good Antivirus Software. There are many different ones out there on the market some are free but some you need to pay for.

Here's a list of just a few of the most popular ones to look at with links.

Which ever one of these you go for you still need to make sure they stay up to date with the "Virus Definitions" as this is the download file of updated and known virus's going around for it to pick up on on your pc or device.

Other Ways to Keep Safe

There are a few other things you can do to help keep yourself bar the Antivirus software.

These are listed below:

  1. If your not expecting an email with an attachment check with the sender before opening it

  2. Make sure your firewall is on, on your pc. (This can be found in Settings - Update & Security - Windows Security - then check Firewall and network protection, if its off turn it on)

  3. Only download apps from websites showing the padlock in address bar

To Finalise:

Always be careful when downloading programs, software and attachments as you never know if they are really what they say they are.

Virus's can be detrimental so always back up your pc and work stored on your computer as you don't want to lost all your hard work.
